The Government Plans to Apply Royalty Charges to New Devices and Recording Mediums

21 January 2008

The Ministry’s proposed ruling, in which the government for the first time expressly states that devices such as cell phones with MP3, USB memory or MP3/MP4 players must pay the contested digital royalty has just been published.

We remind you that the so-called royalty is nothing more than compensatory payment for private copy, which for some time has been pitting operators in the electronic industry against different administrative entities.

The proposal includes, as compensation, a discount on the prices of other mediums traditionally associated with the royalty, such as the CD and DVD burners. The royalty amount for other re-recordable mediums such as CD-RW or DVD-RW remains the same.
